Boston Red Sox Tickets - Historically Speaking

It isn’t where the Boston Red Sox got their start back in 1901. It’s not even the same place it used to be back in 1926 before the first fire that destroyed part of the left-field foul line bleachers which were not replaced. What a sight it must have been to see it burning for 4 hours at a 5-alarm standard and to watch the recent construction go up in flames.

But a year later, in 1934, the new Fenway Park opened and the Boston Red Sox were beaten 6-5 in 11 innings against the Washington Senators. That same year the original wooden wall in left field was removed and just two years later in 1936, a sign of the technologically times was signaled by the 23-foot screen that was put up just above the wall in left field.

Do you know your history about the place where the Boston Red Sox have played when at home? Let’s take it back to the beginning, to 1901 when there was the Huntington Avenue Grounds. The official date was May 8, 1901 and with a capacity that was just under 12,000, Red Sox greats like Cy Young accomplished a feat many players could only dream about by throwing the first perfect game in 1904. Proof of the point came in 1993, when a statue of Cy was placed where the home plate had been. With a center field at over 650 feet, was there any wonder?

Even with credit for hosting the first AL-NL World Series under its belt in 1903, it wasn’t enough to keep the Huntington Grounds from seeing their last game in October, 1911. And so, in 1912, the Red Sox came to Fenway Park. It was that same year that Hugh Bradley his the last home run.

With an original capacity for 35,000 before the two fires, by 1946, sky view seats were being added to the park. Just a year later, in keeping with changes that would later become commonplace norms, the Red Sox played their first night game and defeated who? You guessed it, the White Sox, 5-3.

Perhaps there’s an unspoken synergy between the Red Sox and Fenway Park as year after year though history and various opponents the Red Sox have continued to pitchers from Babe Ruth to Clay Buchholz on the mound to belt out unmistakable no-hitters against the likes of teams ranging from the Washington Senators to the Baltimore Orioles.

True enough, no one has matched Cy’s perfect game but with a mile long list of rare feats that includes a well populated list of Red Sox players who have hit for the cycle through this team’s history there’s no place for hung heads here.

It doesn’t take rocket science to see that year after year, the Red Sox have brought home the World Series, AL Division Series and AL Championship Series against everyone from the New York Giants in 1912 to the Colorado Rockies in 2007.

Fashion History of Bbw and Plus Size Women

BBW is an acronym for “Big Beautiful Women.” In the past, a big beautiful body was associated with health and wealth. As a matter of fact, up until the 1960’s, BBW and plus size women were lauded for their beautiful physiques. The plus size woman appeared in almost all of the fashion photographs, films, and paintings of the 1920’s-1950’s. When did all of this change?

In the 1960’s, plus size fashion rapidly disappeared from the covers of magazines and on the silver screen. Many people attribute this changing trend to the first teenage supermodel --Twiggy. Ironically, Twiggy’s name suited her slender frame quite well. Instead of plus size blouses, plus size dresses, and skirts, Twiggy wore slinky dresses which hugged her small frame. In 1967, Marshall McLuhan boldly said: “Twiggy is an Xray, not a picture.”

Unlike plus size BBW, who portray a picture of health and happiness, Twiggy looked ill at a mere 95 pounds. Unfortunately, women all over the world quickly became unhappy with their bodies and fashion choices. Clothes that were made for small-framed girls were bright, fashionable, and affordable. The options for plus size BBW? Well, let’s just say they weren’t so glamorous in the 1960’s.

BBW and plus size women were largely ignored in the 1970’s and 1980’s as well. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that BBW and plus size women had enough. Curvy women and full-figured women were tired of trying to obtain an idea of perfection that was sold to them through every media median. Billboards, magazines, television shows, radio commercials and films portrayed Anna Nicole Smith, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, and Kate Moss with their “perfect” bodies in the hottest designer fashions.

Then, as the millennium approached, the world watched in shock as something happened: tabloids and reality television began sharing the private lives of these models. Being thin wasn’t as glitzy, glamorous, and easy as it seemed. When the cameras weren’t rolling and the photographers weren’t around, many of these models struggled to stay thin. BBW and plus size women were finally able to let out a sign of relief. In a fashion-conscious world that oppressed plus size women and BBW for so long, BBW were finally recognized as being healthier than the small-framed models. But, at what cost? How many BBW and plus size women developed eating disorders in their pursuits of thinner bodies? We may never know.

In 2002, the world tuned in to watch the shocking reality sitcom the “Anna Nicole Show.” Although Anna Nicole’s life inarguably looked disastrous, no one could deny that she had gone from a slim Guess model in the 90’s to a plus size BBW over the course of a decade. She eventually experienced success, not only from her reality sitcom, but as a plus size clothing designer. Unfortunately, Anna Nicole Smith died as a result of an overdose. Her untimely death, as well as her son’s, is still shrouded by mystery.

Many people wonder if Anna Nicole Smith was the first famous BBW plus size model. It’s safe to say that this is disputable. Emme (Melissa) Aronson is recognized as the first BBW plus size model by many high-standing members of the fashion world, and Angellika is the first plus-size model that was inducted into the modeling Hall of Fame. It’s all subjective, really.

Nevertheless, all of these women paved the way for plus size BBW all over the world. Women, finally, have been recognized and accepted in every shape and form. How to express your opinion

We have all felt our blood boil when someone says something we consider unfounded, exaggerated, or plain ignorant.

What are you supposed to do then? If you express an opposing opinion you might find yourself entering into an argument with someone that, in fact, you did not care to pick a bone with, or there may also be the deadly feared strained silence.

Before I go on, let me say that I have found a new venue to air our one's feelings when you know something is not right and not only to air out your viewpoint, but a place where the point and purpose is precisely to build up momentum till something is done about it. That venue is Street Rebuttal.

Here are some tips that you might consider helpful.

Step 1

First of all, it makes a difference if you are talking to a stranger or a friend? In the case of a friend, be sure not to appear belligerent or crazy, or else you might just aggravate the situation. If you're debating with a friend think about his feelings. Will he be hurt by debating with you? Will he talk over you and refuse to listen?

Step 2

Say what you have to say, but in non-confrontational manner. You too have a right to an opinion, but maybe there is no need to go up in flames. People are a lot more apt to listen to you if you offer your opinion calmly.

Step 3

Be sure to be a good listener too. No one likes to converse with someone who will comment on something that you did not even say. It is best that you fully comprehend your "opponent's" viewpoint. And be prepared not to always win the argument... Even if you think you are right, best to loose the argument sometimes than to loose a friend. Swallowing your pride and admitting that they have a point (you don't have to agree with their opinions) may be the better way to walk away with a handshake (and a smile?).

Step 4

Just be aware that regardless of how good your opinion is, there is most likely someone out there who will have an opposing view. Oh, and picking your battles can save you a lot of embarrassment.

What is it really like to be in a rainforest? It’s hot and sticky. As you eco-trek out of your hammock and go hiking, you’re immediately covered in sweat. Your underwear clings, your pants cling, and things that Eek! aren’t part of your clothing at all cling to you. You’re also instantly covered in bugs. And the wet forest is, as its name would imply, wet. Hence, Whoops! Slippery. You’re immediately covered in mud too.

 

While you’re trying to remove the sweat, bugs and mud off with handkerchiefs, moist towelettes and Off (in the environmentally friendly pump containers), you’ll find insects that look like sticks and frogs that look like leaves and moths that look like birds and lizards that look like anything they sit on. There seem to be problems with identity in the jungle. Among the various things the wet forest needs is, probably, psychiatric help.

 

Every kind of plant and animal has some sort of stringer, barb, thorn, prickle, spine, poison. There’s a fierce competition for nutrients on the ground which is why rainforest soil is so notoriously poor and easily damaged by horticulture. The tremendous hardwood trees of the jungle, rising 120 feet with prodigious buttresses and trunks as big around tract houses are rooted in earth where you couldn’t grow petunias.

 

The wet forest is not, however, scary; not even in the dark. Though it is dense, tangled, and filled with remarkably icky things like bugs, you start looking at the multitude of insects. The astounding number of them. The great smacking bogs and oodles, the scads, the lasings of bugs galore. Why do people spend so little time contemplating the ugliness of nature? How many humans get all the way through even the most fabulous sunset without getting up for a beer or going inside to check the evening news? But you can watch an enraged fruit bat trying to take out a professor’s face. An enraged Malaysian fruit bat looks like a colonel in the RAT Airforce. It has a set of teeth that look like it could perform an appendectomy. If I were a local resident, I’d keep the fruit out in the garage or rent a mini-storage space.

 

Trekking along the footpaths and rocky outbacks of Asia’s forests you come across water camps. Here, really sophisticated efforts at simplicity have been made. The camps are nothing but wobbly, bamboo platforms with a roof of palm leaves. Some camps get balsa plaques carved by previous tour groups. The plaques bear names of travelers and descriptions of some of the highlights of their travels. Some contain poems in the order of:

 

Though the bugs made noise,

Our trip was full of joys,

Because the monkey howls’

And the wise owl hoots,

That it is bad to pollute.

 

So, we all know what awaits us: muggy outcrops, swampy mangroves, river floodplains. In the forest, an unknown number of animal, plant and insect life wait to be discovered. They can be reached by air and land travel. What strikes many tourists’ fancy nowadays is having a taste of life in the rainforest.

Jungle Adventure Tips

 

• Find out as much as you can about the trail and surroundings.

 

• Plan your route carefully to allow enough time for you to complete it before darkness sets in.

• Inform the park official or other people of your plans for the day, especially if you are going alone.

 

• Pack plenty of water and a few snacks to maintain your energy level.

 

• It is best to set out at dawn when animals begin to seek food and the warmth of the early morning sun. Move about as quietly as possible to avoid scaring any wildlife.

 

• Wear thin, loose, cotton clothing to remain comfortable.

 

• Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts protect arms and legs from mosquitoes and thorny plants.

 

• Wear sturdy shoes that support your ankles well and allow your feet to grip the ground as you walk Leech socks or long socks prevent leeches from getting at your legs.

 

• A poncho, large enough to cover you and your belongings, will provide protection from sudden rain showers.

 

• A wide brimmed hat is highly recommended for providing shade from the tropical sun.

So How Many Platforms Does Maruti Have?

Automotive reporting done by daily newspapers seems to be getting absurder by the day. Most of our reporting relies on 'getting a byte from some senior executive' and then 'weaving a tall tale around it'. There is very little research, no understanding about the functioning of the industry and simply no respect for facts. One of the leading business dailies today reports on Maruti-Suzuki bringing in the SX4 sedan. Nothing wrong in that and the piece seems to be well written till I reach the following paragraph:

"MUL has also brought in its fourth platform with the introduction of the 1.6 litre SX4 sedan, which is pitted against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, General Motors's Optra and Ford Motor's Escort. This platform will be the base to introduce all MUL's new bigger cars."

WTF???

Isn't the SX4 Maruti's fifth platform? And Ford Escort? That died about a decade back. A tired, overworked writer or one too lazy to check facts?

It gets better further down the story. The writer further claims:

"MUL currently has three platforms. One is used to manufacture the M- 800 and Swift. The Esteem is manufactured from the second platform, and the Alto, WagonR and Zen Estilo, are manufactured from the third."

Manufacturing the micro-sized 800 (of early 80s vintage) and the sub-compact sized Swift (circa 2005) from the same platform is quite an engineering feat for the writer!

The case seems to be a quote by Maruti's MD, Jagdish Khattar, being lost in translation. What he meant:

"All future models will be based on our three existing platforms," as in the Alto platform, the Swift platform and the SX4 platform. The 800 platform and the Esteem-Versa platform are old ones and will die their natural death.

Yet another business daily reported:

"The new SX4 sedan is the third platform added to the stable of Maruti, with one for cars like for Alto and Zen Estillo and WagonR, and another for Swift."

Ummm, you missed the other models.

Multi-core Technology Will Have a Disruptive Impact on Your Business

Imagine that you have a factory with one assembler and one quality assurance (QA) engineer. Each item that the assembler churns out passes through the QA prior to being packed for delivery. As you add more assemblers on the factory floor, you will reach the optimum efficiency level of the QA engineer. Once you exceed this number, QA becomes the bottleneck.

Fast forward to present-day computing practices. Most enterprises practice the concept of one application per server. In a small business environment, this practice is acceptable as typically you only have a handful of servers performing all of the computing requirements of the business. Management is simple and straight forward.

In large enterprises you have hundreds or thousands of employees with operations situated at multiple locations. You have application servers supporting finance, logistics, human resources, production, purchasing, design and development. You also have your usual file and print servers, as well as several email servers strategically located by regions. IDC estimates that per dollar spent on buying a server, it will cost you $7 to manage it. Your TCO is now running out of control with almost no hope in sight.

To complicate matters, studies have shown that most applications do not fully utilize the computing resources of the servers on which they run. The utilization ranges from 5 to 10 percent depending on the application. Now you have the CIO demanding a recounting of resources and better justification for the request for a new server to house the new application.

Luckily an old technology once available only on very expensive mainframe computers has now found its way into the distributed world of UNIX and Windows environments. Virtualization allows you to create several 'virtual servers' that can house your applications. This raises the utilization levels of existing servers and increases productivity because setting up a new server for a new application will take only hours instead of days or weeks.

Complementing virtualization is a recent advancement in microprocessor design and manufacturing - multi-core. A multi-core microprocessor is one which combines two or more independent processors into a single package. For example, a dual-core device contains two independent microprocessors. With appropriate software, a multi-core processor can perform parallel execution of multiple software threads. The operating system (OS) perceives each of its execution cores as a discrete processor, with all the associated execution resources.

By enabling enhanced performance and more-efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks, multi-core processors promise to improve user experiences in both home and business environments.

Benefits of multi-core

Martin Reynolds, vice president at Gartner, believes that "the multi-core initiative is going to be the single greatest performance advance we've seen in the PC processor. For those applications that take advantage of it, you'll get a 50 to 60 percent performance boost. We haven't seen that since the original transition from the Intel 80286 processor to the Intel386 processor."

Multi-core processors allow you to complete today's computing tasks more efficiently and will enable entirely new computing experiences, and the benefits apply to server and client platforms, as well as the home and enterprise environments. Multi-core capability can enhance user experiences in multitasking environments, where a number of foreground applications run concurrently with a number of background applications such as virus protection and security, wireless, management, compression, encryption and synchronization.

By multiplying the number of cores in the processor, you dramatically increase the PC's capabilities and computing resources, which reflect a shift to better responsiveness, higher multithreaded throughput, and the benefits of parallel computing in mainstream applications.

In the Digital Enterprise

The steady increase in the density of systems in data centers is creating power and cooling challenges for many IT organizations. Part of the answer will be multi-core server platforms. By enabling a single processor form factor to serve multiple processor cores, these platforms will provide superior performance and scalability while remaining relatively constant in power consumption, heat and space requirements. As a result, more processing capacity can be concentrated into fewer servers. This means greater density and fewer servers to manage.

IDC's vice president and general manager of Enterprise Computing, Vernon Turner says that "when you quadruple the capacity of today's servers with multi-core processors, you can run new workloads. Typical 4-way servers will handle jobs that previously required midrange or high-end symmetric multi-processing systems. As a result, we will move complex business processes, databases, data mining, and inquiry and data intelligence applications onto industry-standard multi-core servers".

In the Digital Office

Multi-core processors hold the promise of sustaining the enormous increases in computer performance seen over the last quarter century. What will this performance mean for office productivity? Graphic designers, for instance, can render images much more quickly on multi-core systems. The greater responsiveness of multi-core platforms translates to less waiting for everyone in the digital office. For stockbrokers, this could literally mean dollars, as their computers enable more-informed investment decisions and faster trades.

For Mobile Users

Advances in wireless technology have taken mobile computing to places we never dreamed of. Today you will find a business executive working remotely in an airport coffee shop via Wi-Fi. Adding multi-core processors to the mobile mix will expand horizons even more. Incredible new mobile technologies will enable doctors in cities to remotely diagnose patients living in isolated locations (for example).

In 2006, we will see successful deployments of new PCs and servers that take advantage of multi-core technology. The new Intel duo-processor notebooks announced early this year are testament to this development.

"I firmly believe that multi-core processing will change the way we think, build, and manage IT infrastructures. Multi-core processors will be at the foundation of everything we do and how we think about computing," says Turner.

Jean Jennings is a writer for the Automobile Magazine which is currently considered as one of the country’s publications that dwells on automotive lifestyles and everything else automotive. The 2007 Ken Purdy Award which Jennings received was given by the International Motor Press Association (or the IMPA) and it was given to her because of the article “Veyron in the USA” which was published in the June 2006 issue of the magazine.

Costa Brava Holiday - Fabulous Blue Flag Beaches in Costa Brava Spain

Your Costa Brava holiday will probably feature a trip to one of the glorious stretches of beach along the Costa Brava coast. How then to chose the best time of year and the best beach from the 190 kms of the Catalonian coast?

The amazing coastline that stretches for some 190kms starting at the French border has a spectacular number of beaches and coves. Choosing the right one is made instantly easier with the Blue Flag which guarantees a high level of standards.

Many of the beaches in the Costa Brava have been awarded Blue Flag status, which means that they have all passed the rigorous testing that allows the beach to be given the Blue Flag.

Things like water quality, cleanliness of the beach, information and education of the ecosystems around the coastline, adequate number of lifeguards and lifesaving equipment must be on hand, first aid equipment must be available on the beach and drinking water obtainable.

To be awarded the Blue Flag, 29 conditions have to be met and at any time these conditions are not being met, the flag will be removed. This guarantees that you will be able to enjoy your time at the beach to its fullest, safe in the knowledge that the little things that make the difference have been taken care of before you even step foot on the sands.

The Costa Brava coastline has the largest concentration of Blue Flag beaches in Spain, a tremendous accolade which tells you that the Costa Brava takes very seriously its duties towards you the visitor.

Here then are three of the prettiest coves which have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag. There are many more that warrant further note, so watch out for more information on other beaches on the spectacular coastline of the Costa Brava.

Aigua Blava's turquoise blue water washes gently across the amarillo-yellow of the sand in this tiny inlet. Turned to face away from the cliff faces, nature has protected this special place from the ravages of the sea, allowing safe bathing in a picturesque and tranquil setting.

Back in the 1950's, for the first time more people had disposable income to spend on travel and with Spain being a short distance away and definitely 'abroad', the Costa Brava and Aigua Blava in particular became the focus of attention. Colour, light and breathtaking views draw people back year after year. Coupled with friendly and attentive service at the hotels and restaurants, you will be sure to enjoy a wonderful Costa Brava holiday in this particular spot.

Tamariu is slightly bigger than Aigua Blava and a short hike across the cliff tops if you would like a change of scenery from Aigua Blava. This little cove opens out onto the Mediterranean Sea like a flower, allowing the sandy beach protection from the rugged rock faces that line the inlet.

Fancy a bit of exercise? Then walk the Cami de Ronda, the traditional coastline walk of sheep farmers and smugglers, to discover hidden coves and caves. The route takes you along the tree line towards Cala Pedrosa and onwards to Llafranc.

If walking is not your thing, hiring a kayak or small motorboat might be just the thing to find that pretty inlet where you are the only person on the beach!

Llafranc is the largest of our featured Blue Flag beaches, but is still small enough to retain an intimacy with its stylish little port and crescent shaped sandy beach stretching for some meters across the bay.

Most Requested Hot Appetizers, Delicious Desserts and Classic Cocktails

I am not a "throw-a-can-of-peanuts-on-the-table" kind of gal! When I am planning a party, it is important to me that I choose thoughtful, satisfying recipes that:

Are simple to make

Have few ingredients

Hold up well over time

Are pleasing to look at and of course,

Taste great!

Over the years, I have tried out a lot of recipes on my friends and family and no doubt about it, the "Most Requested Hot Appetizers, Delicious Desserts and Summer Drinks" are those listed below (in no particular order).

Top 2 Hot Appetizers

Number One Most Requested Hot Appetizer--Warm Chipotle Cheddar Dip

2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1-8 oz. can whole kernel corn, drained (3/4 cup)

1-4 oz. can chopped green chili peppers, drained

2 teaspoons finely chopped canned chipotle chili peppers in adobo sauce (or to taste)

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 medium tomato, seeded and chopped (3/4 cup)

1/4 cup sliced green onion

2 tablespoons snipped fresh cilantro

Vegetables, crackers or chips

I found this dip when I was on a low carb diet and was looking for a party appetizer that would work well with vegetables. Something with a robust flavor that would perk up the veggies. Well this one definitely fit the bill.

This appetizer has become a favorite among my friends. It's served multiple times throughout the year at various parties that I either host or attend.

You can make it as smokey and spicy as you want by adjusting the amount of chipotle peppers (smoked jalepenos) but watch out. You can easily go from mildly spicy to blow-your-face-off hot by adding too much!

Steps to Make Cheddar Chipotle Dip

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Stir together cheeses, mayonnaise, corn, green chili peppers, chipotle chili peppers and garlic powder in a large mixing bowl. Spread mixture into a 1 quart, covered dish. Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly.

Top with tomato, green onion and cilantro. I like to make a pattern out of the toppings so I put the tomatoes all in the middle, make a ring around them with the green onion then sprinkle the cilantro over all.

Serve with vegetables, like red, green and yellow peppers. Tostido and Frito Scoops work well too.

Number Two Most Requested Hot Appetizer--Warm Green Chili Dip

8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

8 oz. shredded mild cheddar cheese

2 cups mayonnaise

1 small sweet onion, minced

1 can (4 oz.) chopped green chilis, drained

1-1/2 oz. chopped pepperoni

1/2 cup sliced ripe olives

Tostidos or Fritos Scoops

In a shallow baking dish, combine the first five ingredients. Top mixture with the pepperoni and olives. Bake at 325 degrees about 25 minutes or until bubbly.

Serve with Scoops, crackers or assorted fresh vegetables.

Note: I do not recommend using reduced fat mayonnaise.

Speaking from personal experience, both of these hot appetizers are guaranteed to be a hit at any get together.

WARNING: Get ready to hand out the recipes!

Top 2 Delicious Desserts

Number One Most Requested Delicious Dessert--Raspberry White Chocolate Dream Bars

1 box white cake mix

1/3 cup evaporated milk

1-1/2 sticks melted butter

1 cup chopped nuts

1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam

12 oz. white chocolate chips

Combine cake mix, milk, butter and nuts. Makes a very gooey dough. Spray a 9 x 13 pan and spread half of the dough into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Melt the jam in the microwave (about a minute) and spread on top of hot crust. Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over jam. Crumble remaining dough on top and bake an additional 20-25 minutes.

Cool completely before cutting. For bigger parties, this recipe easily doubles and can be made in a 15 x 10 pan.

Once you get the hang of this technique, you can think of all sorts of combinations. How about using chocolate cake with mint chips? Or lemon cake with white chocolate?

Number Two Most Requested Delicious Dessert--Chocolate Amaretto Bundt Cake

1 pkg. chocolate devil's food cake mix

1 small pkg. instant chocolate pudding mix

4 eggs

1 cup milk

1-1/2 oz. Amaretto liqueur

1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil

1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

1 cup fresh raspberries (optional)

1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam (optional)

Whipped cream (optional)

Glaze

1 stick butter

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup Amaretto

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Combine first 6 ingredients and blend well. Stir in chips. Grease and flour a bundt pan. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean.

Melt glaze ingredients in a saucepan or microwave. Pour 2/3 of glaze over top of cake while cake is hot from oven and still in pan. Allow cake to remain in pan for 25 minutes. Remove cake from pan and drizzle with remaining glaze.

When I make this cake dessert, I fill the middle with fresh raspberries and present it on my grandmother's crystal pedestal cake stand which is very dramatic.

Just before serving, I make a raspberry sauce by melting the jam in the microwave. Each lucky guest gets a plate with some of the sauce, a slice of cake, a few berries and some whipped cream. Yum!

Top 2 Summer Drinks

When most people host parties, they usually have the basic alcoholic beverages, like beer and wine, but rarely do you see a host offer a selection of really special summer drinks. I have perfected my list of offerings over the years and now I share my Top 2 with you.

Number One Most Requested Summer Cocktail--Limoncello Mint Lemonade

1/2 cup lemonade concentrate

1/4 cup fresh mint leaves

1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

Ice cubes

1/4 cup Limoncello (lemon liqueur)

1/2 cup club soda

Lemon and Mint for garnish

In a small pitcher, "muddle" mint leaves together with lemonade concentrate and lemon juice. Muddle means to bruise the leaves so they release their flavor. I use the end of a wooden spoon.

Stir in ice cubes, Limoncello and club soda and pour into 4 glasses. Top them off with a lemon slice, a sprig of fresh mint and an umbrella.

Makes 4-10 oz. drinks.

Number Two Most Requested Summer Cocktail--Fruited Brandy Punch

This one has become a favorite at my home and a lot of the parties I attend, most likely because everyone loves it and you can make a huge amount and serve it in a punch bowl.

1/2 part brandy (I use Christian Brothers brand)

1 part lemon-lime soda

2 parts fruit juice (Cranberry-Peach blend is my favorite)

1/2 bag frozen fruit (Blueberries and strawberries look great)

1 fruited ice ring (see recipe below)

Slices of lemons, limes and oranges, if desired

Mix fruit juice and frozen fruit together in a nice punch bowl or container. Pour in lemon-lime soda, gently stir and then float an ice ring on top (see recipe below).

Rather than spike the punch, I serve the brandy on the side so my guests who prefer non-alcoholic punch can drink it too.

To make ice ring

Pour 1-2 cups of the juice mixture from above into a Bundt pan or another mold. Add some of the fruit and/or fresh citrus slices. Freeze overnight.

Just before serving, set the pan into some hot water to loosen the ice ring and then turn it into the punch bowl. It makes a really beautiful presentation, cools the punch and since it's made with juice, it will not water down the punch. Perfect!

This recipe can easily be altered so you can serve it from a Drink Fountain which is really gaining popularity lately. Just leave out the fruit and the ice ring.

If you went to a summer party and somebody handed you any of these summer drinks, wouldn't you think that the hosts went out of their way to make things special? That they really took time to get it right? Everybody loves a special summer drink on a warm sunny day.
