Now I'm not outlining a perfect solution for every baby, nor am I saying that white noise alone will solve the problem. But studies indicate it can go a long way to reduce noise distractions, fussiness and colic in infants.  You may want to experiment with each of the options below to find what works for you.

Methods - Acoustic

White noise is all around us: fans, motors, the wind outside -- all are obvious examples. However, we want to be able to play our white noise on demand, thus we need a device of some sort.  The simplest solution is a fan, but if it's winter time, a blowing fan isn't the perfect thing to use. There are a variety of acoustic noise makers that offer the ability to customize the sound through adjustable vents. These are dedicated devices that do one thing and do it well.

Pros: More "natural" sounding white noise due to physically moving air.  Electrical devices never run out of batteries in the middle of the night.

Cons: Can be more costly to purchase. Sound is limited to rushing air noise.  Fans will blow things around or could create drafts in baby's room.

Methods - Electronic

There are an almost limitless selection of electronic devices. These play a shorter recorded sound that continually loops and can offer a variety of unique sounds from bubbling brooks to ocean to whale sounds.  They usually can be powered with a battery which is good for traveling parents. The

Pros: Variety of sounds available. Adjustable volume. May be good for travel if battery powered.

Cons: Battery powered devices may run out of juice in the middle of the night causing a waking. Sound loops can be distracting if you can hear the spot where they repeat. Small speakers can often be tinny or buzz if of poor quality.

Electronic Recordings and CDs

The latest trend is to offer a electronically recorded version on CDs or downloadable media like MP3s. The immediacy of being able to buy and download on-deman is a great time saver for a desperate parent who needs a solution RIGHT NOW! There are a rich variety of high-quality digital recordings that may soothe and relax your baby. From hair dryers to the inside of an automobile, there is bound to be an option available that will please even the most fussy baby.

Pros: Realistic sounds. Can be looped infinitely. Portable if you have a digital audio player with external speakers.

Cons: Require some type of player and an external sound source, like speakers. May require a dedicated player or multiple plug ins.

My Method - The "optimal" environment

I have experimented will all the variations of sound production devices.  Each of the methods above worked to some degree or another.

Our baby's favorite was an electronically downloaded file recording of a clothes dryer played on an iPod looping forever. Computer speakers hidden under the crib allowed the volume to be increased or decreased depending on her needs.

You may find another solution works better, but this was what I term the optimal environment - one you can leave running and forget about while you attend to all the other things that a baby needs.

Conclusion

If you are having trouble with a baby who has trouble getting to sleep, go get your white noise sound source based on the information above and start tonight.  Don't expect a miracle or even an immediate success, but you could likely see results quickly as you baby is returned to a sound environment they are familiar with.

History of Puma Shoes

You would never guess it but the history of the Puma shoe company is a dramatic one involving world war, Olympic glory and brotherly strife.  The company began humbly enough.  Rudolph and Adolf (Adi) Dassler, two brothers from Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, grew up with a father who worked in a shoe factory and a mother who ran a small laundry business.  Rudolph left his little brother behind to fight in World War I.  He eventually returned to Herzogenaurach in 1924 where he started his own shoe company with Adi called Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.  This was the first incarnation of what would become Puma shoes.  The brothers ran the factory out of their mother’s laundry business.  They were said to use a stationary bicycle to generate power in order to run their equipment.  

In 1936 Adi decided to drive across country to the Olympic Village.  He had a suitcase full of spikes and a simple plan: convince American sprinter Jesse Owens to wear Dassler Brothers’ spikes during the races.  Adi was successful, and after Owens went on to win four gold medals that summer Dassler Brothers’ athletic shoes were globally in demand.

Unfortunately, World War II was just around the corner.  Both brothers joined the Nazi Party, but at some point during the War, they had a falling out.  The facts are not abundantly clear, but the split between the two brothers may have had something to do with their different political viewpoints, or Rudolph’s belief that he was turned in to the Americans by his brother.  

The result was that after World War II the brothers split the business.  Adi founded the company adidas (from Adi Dassler), and Rudolph took charge of a company he dubbed Ruda (from Rudolph Dassler).  Ruda was later re-christened Puma, like the South American panther.  

Discord between the two brothers continued as each company fought for the sponsorship of different athletes.  In one particular memorable business transaction, German sprinter Armin Hary agreed to wear Pumas at the 1960s Summer Olympics for a sizable fee.  He decided against wearing adidas (which he had worn before) after adidas declined to pay the sprinter for wearing their shoes.  Hary wore his Pumas during the 100-meter dash and was victorious.  But he showed up to the medal ceremony in a pair of adidas.  The sprinter was hoping to be paid by both companies, but Adi was so angry that he refused to have anything to do with Hary for the rest of Hary’s career.  

Both brothers’ businesses are extraordinarily successful.  Unfortunately, they never reconciled.  They are buried on opposite ends of the same cemetery.
