The problem - Your baby won't sleep

You arrive home with a new baby who's been inside the womb for 9 months, listening to mommy's breathing and a heartbeat thrumming in her ears. Now we suddenly plop them into a crib where they are expected to sleep, in silence. Something here doesn't make sense. No wonder there are so many searches done on babies who won't sleep.

The solution - White noise

Comfort comes from keeping an environment similar to what baby was used to all those months tucked inside mom's tummy. The little one, far from needing quiet for a good night's sleep, needs noise -- white noise.

Now I'm not outlining a perfect solution for every baby, nor am I saying that white noise alone will solve the problem. But studies indicate it can go a long way to reduce noise distractions, fussiness and colic in infants.  You may want to experiment with each of the options below to find what works for you.

Methods - Acoustic

White noise is all around us: fans, motors, the wind outside -- all are obvious examples. However, we want to be able to play our white noise on demand, thus we need a device of some sort.  The simplest solution is a fan, but if it's winter time, a blowing fan isn't the perfect thing to use. There are a variety of acoustic noise makers that offer the ability to customize the sound through adjustable vents. These are dedicated devices that do one thing and do it well.

Pros: More "natural" sounding white noise due to physically moving air.  Electrical devices never run out of batteries in the middle of the night.

Cons: Can be more costly to purchase. Sound is limited to rushing air noise.  Fans will blow things around or could create drafts in baby's room.

Methods - Electronic

There are an almost limitless selection of electronic devices. These play a shorter recorded sound that continually loops and can offer a variety of unique sounds from bubbling brooks to ocean to whale sounds.  They usually can be powered with a battery which is good for traveling parents. The

Pros: Variety of sounds available. Adjustable volume. May be good for travel if battery powered.

Cons: Battery powered devices may run out of juice in the middle of the night causing a waking. Sound loops can be distracting if you can hear the spot where they repeat. Small speakers can often be tinny or buzz if of poor quality.

Electronic Recordings and CDs

The latest trend is to offer a electronically recorded version on CDs or downloadable media like MP3s. The immediacy of being able to buy and download on-deman is a great time saver for a desperate parent who needs a solution RIGHT NOW! There are a rich variety of high-quality digital recordings that may soothe and relax your baby. My Method - The "optimal" environment

I have experimented will all the variations of sound production devices.  Each of the methods above worked to some degree or another.

Our baby's favorite was an electronically downloaded file recording of a clothes dryer played on an iPod looping forever. Computer speakers hidden under the crib allowed the volume to be increased or decreased depending on her needs.

You may find another solution works better, but this was what I term the optimal environment - one you can leave running and forget about while you attend to all the other things that a baby needs.

Conclusion

If you are having trouble with a baby who has trouble getting to sleep, go get your white noise sound source based on the information above and start tonight.  Don't expect a miracle or even an immediate success, but you could likely see results quickly as you baby is returned to a sound environment they are familiar with.

When are We Gonna Have a Tool Sale on Mother’s Day?

In all the years that I have been a vigorous consumer of tools, I have yet to see a sale for the female builder and do-it-herselfer. And - I think it is time for that phenomenon to be rectified.
No longer to be relegated to shopping for the blowout tool sale of the year on Father’s Day where I am asked, “What other tools does he already have?”, or, “Does he need bits to go with that drill?”, etc., etc. ENOUGH!

That “HE” is “ME!” And it is time we have a blowout tool sale on Mother’s Day!

Numerous articles and reports are addressing the emerging economic fact that women are now the leading home buyers and 60% share of inquiries on web sites such as Home Depot and Lowes. Many of these women are single, and/or not paired in relationships with male partners. So where are they getting satisfactory answers and services to their questions ? Their tool needs?

Exactly! I don’t know the answer to that either. But it is time that we find the answers. I am constantly perplexed by this notion that women with tools is a newly evolved activity. We have been doing it for ourselves, and quite aptly I might add, since the beginning.

The Y chromosome is not the holy grail of building, creating and home improvement. These abilities and talents reside within some of us, and skip some of us, gender notwithstanding. And to speak up for the guys, if I might be so bold here…that is undue pressure on them to assume that they have not only the talent, but the propensity to swing a hammer!

I am glad that these large corporations are now beginning to cater to the female population, even though the sincerity seems somewhat disingenuous as it comes only after the quarterly financials are published.

But the real proof for me will be when I see a major ad campaign, targeting women, announcing the, “3 Day Tool Sale!” And not just on Mother’s Day, but Spring when the weather is improving for projects, Christmas time for gift giving, and Labor Day to honor the hard work we do ALL year!

The challenge is cast…now let us sit back and watch to see who is genuinely sincere in their corporate efforts to capture the women carpenters and D-I-Hers. I am holding my applause…
