Winter Time Is Midge Time When Fly Fishing For Trout

Let's face it, we dream in Technicolor of size 10 green drake
hatches or Hexagenia Limbata as big as beavers - but the reality
is Winter Time Is Midge Time. Often the only bugs on the frigid
water are so small; they challenge most anglers to consider
LASIK. And as you already know, much of the eating is under the
surface.

At a fly-tying class, I once heard a locally famous fly tier
named Pops quip something along the line of "my second best fly
tying material supplier is Hobby Lobby". This, of course,
assumes that Blue Heron Fly Shop where we were sitting is his
"first best". This guy is also well known for the quote "it
ain't no use, if it ain't chartreuse" but that, as they say, is
another story.

Armed with this nugget of wisdom, I scoured every section of
Hobby Lobby. Eureka! Great little wires for tying "ribs" of
nymphs, wonderful foam sheets for terrestrials, assorted yarn
varieties for ‘buggers, and beads, beads, beads! All this is
available at a fraction of the cost of their fly-shop
counterparts. Bingo!

From this magnificent Wall-O'-Beads, I found some fine little
metal ones in a small pinky-sized cylinder. They came in a
variety of colors like olive, purple, copper, and brown. Many
had fancy names like Brown Iris Metallic Beads (the one I took
home) and numerous others. Perfect. We ARE talking tiny here.
Just the right size to barely squeeze on to barb-less size 20
hooks and be proportionate.

Armed with these at my fly tying station, I began to
experiment. If you have ever collected and looked at tiny water
bugs, you will note their appendages and segmentations are not
distinct unless under a microscope. So, I combined the little
bead heads with many simple body materials trying to find a
simple-to-tie solution. I wanted to approximately match the
hatch from recent trips to the stream. I finally boiled it down
to dyed goose biots. I had originally experimented with biots to
tie Prince Nymphs at a much larger scale and certainly a
different application. My favorite biot color is olive, and man,
what a great subtle segmented body biots make. Ultimately, I
designed Duff's Bead/Biot Midge - perfect for fishing Winter's
cold waters. More than just this emerger, I developed a powerful
One-Two Punch combination that has proven itself over and over
in many tailraces throughout Texas and Oklahoma.

Though the tiny bead/biot midge is a killer as a dropper below
a larger nymph, the One-Two Punch consists of a dropper below a
similar looking dry. Before I give you the recipe, let me
describe the simplicity of these two flies. The dry fly is:
olive thread, olive biot, and olive/gray hackle on a size twenty
barb-less hook. The dropper, often fished just 6 inches below
the dry, is: olive thread, olive biot, and metallic bead on a
size twenty barb-less hook. Simple, right? It's really easy to
tie too. But don't let that make you feel guilty when you when
you catch numerous trout with it.

Duff's Dry Midge - Olive

Materials -

* Hook: Size 20 dry

* Thread: Olive 8/0

* Body: Goose Biot dyed olive

* Hackle: Olive/Gray sized to match hook gap

* Head: Olive Thread

Technique - Crush barb, put hook in vise, jamb knot thread and
wrap back to bend, tie in point of biot, wrap thread forward,
spiral biot forward leaving segmentation and tie down with half
hitch, tie in single hackle, trim base, wrap hackle and tie off,
whip finish forming head, add cement.

Duff's Bead/Biot Midge - Olive

Materials -

* Hook: Size 20 dry or scud/nymph

* Thread: Olive 8/0

* Body: Goose Biot dyed olive

* Head: Brown Iris Bead

Technique - Crush barb, place bead head on hook, put hook in
vise, jamb knot thread and wrap back to bend, tie in point of
biot, wrap thread forward, spiral biot forward leaving
segmentation and tie down with half hitch (optional - tie in a
few strands of crystal flash as a wing and clip close), whip
finish behind bead head, add cement.

Do Sylvia Brown's Spirit Guides Speak Aramaic?

For those of you who haven't seen the above words, let me tell you where they come from.

"Sylvia Browne (born Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker 1936-10-19) is a bestselling American author on the subject of spirituality and is a celebrity psychic and medium," if Wikipedia is to be believed. She's a regular on the Montel Williams show, she founded the Novus Spiritus church, and has a very large following.

At three times during the Novus Spiritus service, the following is recited:

Arem, Shem, Beth, Sedal, Sacrivalian, Ahad.

Although it has been claimed that it is in Aramaic, it really puzzled me, because in her book "Prayers" (published in 2002) and on the Novus Spiritus website, it is translated as:

"Blessed be this Queen on high who is sacred to all who come to Her. Amen."

I was a bit dumbstruck. To me, this is a bunch of jibberish; nothing nearly so structured as how it is being interpreted. Let me break things down:

Arem

It could be 'arem which is not really an Aramaic word in and of itself.

This form could also be the Hebrew name for Aram, the son of Shem.

It could also be 'areym from the root rom which could mean "raised" in the causative (as in something caused to be raised, physically or in tone). But this would be better expressed as mirîm.

It could be `eram which:

In Syriac could mean "rough spot," or "scandal" (!) (but this is usually found in the form `arma' in Syriac.

Shem

It could be shem which means "name," (which is the most common) but by idiom can mean "title," "reputation," (e.g. "good name" or "bad name") or "authority" (i.e. "in the name of X").

It could be sham from the root shom which means in some dialects "evaluate!" or "identify!" (as an imperative).

Beth

This I believe can be only one thing, which is the word beyth which means "house" (and associated idioms, like "family," "structure," "place." etc.) or the second letter of the Aramaic alphabet (ב).

In some rarer cases it can mean "between" but that is in Syriac.

Sedal

The only word that jumps into mind for this one is sadla' whose absolute form is sedal. This, however, is a minority form of a Syriac word for "sandal," a dialect far too young for Browne's claims. Furthermore, the much more common form is sandla'.

Sacrivalian

There is no way that this word is Aramaic.

After many hours of searching through my collections and databases, the closest possible thing I could find is seyqeyr balyon which means "a sausage-maker's amulet," but these two words (since they come from different dialects) have never been historically attested together in this fashion... ever.

That just sounds... Ick.

Ahad

This could either be the word 'echad which is Hebrew for "one."

Or... well I don't know. That's really all that comes to mind immediately.

It could be a verbal form

One very important and striking word that I was expecting to see, given the translation, was "Amen" as "amen" in Aramaic is... well amen. Other than that, I would have expected malkah, malkath or malkthâ' which means "queen," the adjective qadîsh which means "sacred" or "holy," and at least the adjective brîkh which means "blessed" as all three of these words are, to my knowledge, found every dialect on record.

In short: This jumble of syllables is certainly not Aramaic.

Now, another thing to note about Sylvia Browne is that she (and her estranged husband) were several times in the past convicted for fraud. Not to be too biting, but I believe that this leopard has merely whited out its spots. Aramaic is an obscure enough language for people to make wild and generally unchallenged claims about it. Hopefully this issue is now a bit less clouded.

Men Should Know the New Laws in Casual Dressing

Esquire magazine for men says that there are new laws in casual dressing that men should know about before they assemble their outfit.  Here are a few of them:

Shirt

•    When in doubt, always wear an oxford shirt colored white.  But it’s also good to mix shirts sometimes.  Windowpane and Pinstripe shirts are good too.
•    Fitted shirts are good, snug ones are alright, but shirts fitted tightly are simply wrong.
•    You can improve your appearance by tucking in your shirt and by standing up straight.
•    Remember to always tuck in polo and dress shirts hanging below your hip.  Don’t ever tuck in turtlenecks and sweatshirts.  Everything in between is negotiable.
•    The universal language in casual clothing is cotton.  You can wear it anytime to fit in.
•    Only professional athletes can pull off the casual wearing of sports jerseys.
•    The most masculine thing that man can wear is a rugby shirt.

Denim

•    Denim is at the center of all things casual.  However, some things naturally look better with it compared to others.  Here are some examples:
o    Denim looks good all the time with cashmere sweater, navy-blue blazer, brown loafers, t-shirt, or cotton button-down.
o    It looks good most of the time with white sneakers, cotton turtleneck, tweed jacket, black loafers, and crewneck sweatshirt.
o    Sometimes it may look good with sports jersey, high-top sneakers, and hooded sweatshirt.
o    It doesn’t look good at all with necktie, flip-plops, silk shirt, and waistcoat.
o    It looks worse with opera cape, suspenders, and cufflinks.

•    Eastern Europe makes the best stone, acid, or other artificial washes.  The best way for you to break in this kind of jeans is to wear it often.
•    A pair of jeans that cost $40 will fit you as well as the jeans that cost $200.  It will just take you a little longer to find bargains such as these.
•    Never wear two denims or more at the same time, and also make sure that one of them is not a vest.

Shoes

•    The more pointy or shiny your shoes are, the less casual it gets.
•    Some of the best sneakers are inspired by athletes.

More Options

Men should always have more options when it comes to casual dressing.  Here are some of them:

•    Daytime Barbecue
o    Good – polo shirt, khaki chinos, and brown loafers
o    Better – short-sleeved rugby shirt, blue or red chinos, white canvas sneakers
o    Never – tank top, cargo shorts, flip-flops
•    Summer Cocktail Party
o    Good – crisp oxford button-down, cotton chinos, blue wool blazer
o    Better – rumpled oxford button-down, linen trousers, seersucker blazer
o    Never – bright madras blazer, shorts or jeans
•    Bar Drinking
o    Good – button-down shirt, light-blue jeans
o    Better – long-sleeved rugby shirt, dark-blue jeans
o    Never – sports jersey, sweatpants
•    Holiday Party
o    Good – crewneck sweater, corduroy pants
o    Better – turtleneck, cardigan sweater, flannel trousers
o    Never – any holiday costume

Finally, there are pieces of clothing you can dress up such as white sneakers, blue jeans, khaki sports, and polo shirts.  On the other hand, there are other items that are not appropriate to dress up – these are flip-flops, track pants, and sports jerseys.

Flat-Coated Retriever Dog Breed Profile

The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed in England in the nineteenth century and before the Labrador was developed this breed was the retriever of choice. It is very possible that this breed came from a mixture of the Collie, Spaniel and Newfoundland bloodlines. Originally this breed was known as a gundog for hunting on land, but later came to be a retriever for both land and water and is very skilled in both.

It is highly recommended and encouraged that the Flat Coated Retriever begin socialization and obedience training early. As long as this breed is very socialized and trained very well, they are a wonderful house pet and family companion that is friendly towards al and very enthusiastic and optimistic. They bond very closely with everyone in the family and do not seem partial to anyone.

Flat-coats are low-key and calm inside the house, however never seem to run out of energy when playing, retrieving and running outdoors. However, if this breed is not given enough stimulation, activity or companionship, they can tend to be destructive or overly active when by themselves for any length of time. They do well with children, but because of their high energy level are not recommended in a household with small children.

The Flat-Coated Retriever can stand anywhere from twenty-three to twenty-five inches tall and can possibly weigh anywhere from fifty-five to seventy-five pounds. The Flat-coat's coat color is usually a rich brown color, otherwise known as liver-colored. They do not have an undercoat. Their coat is very shiny and full looking, of a medium length and it should lie straight and flat.

One and a half to two and a half cans of a product that is high-quality meat is best for this breed. They can also be fed five cups of a dry dog food complete with vitamins and minerals instead.

This breed is known for his versatility as a hunting dog. He is a very loyal house pet and establishing strong bonds with all members of his family and becomes very devoted to them. However, because of their energy level, they need to be closely supervised around children and are not recommended in a home where there are small children.

Flat-coats need fun training sessions of great variety because they can have a tendency to get bored easily and can become willful if they are bored. The trainer needs to be fun and have short training sessions where the dog cannot sense what is coming next to keep his interest. Positive reinforcement works best for them in their training sessions. They do not tolerate and shy away from any harsh correction or training. Their tendency to be somewhat willful will be on display if harsh correction takes place.

This breed seems to always be very happy and be very optimistic, proven by their constantly wagging tail. They are able to get along very well and live with cats, other dogs, small pets and strangers and do not mind if someone new is introduced once they have established their territory.
